The Sea and History: 1700-1800 The Open Museum, Greenwich Maritime Institute (University of Greenwich) and King’s College London are combining to run an intensive two-week maritime history summer school in the unique environment of historic Greenwich, a World Heritage Site. The 18th century is a rich period for the study of maritime history. It saw rapid growth in oceanic trade, naval power and scientific exploration, while the increasing importance of the sea to European cultures was celebrated in art, literature and commemorative ware. Workshops and seminars will be run by leading maritime historians. The summer school will introduce participants to the historical skills and knowledge needed to study this important and rewarding period of maritime history. Napoleonic News Desk
