The Russian Army Study Group

Napoleonic Newsdesk

Russian troops fought all over Europe, at the battles of Austerlitz, Eylau, Friedland and Borodino and were instrumental in the downfall of Napoleon. David Chandler wrote in his book On The Napoleonic Wars p181, ‘Any consideration of the vast canvas of the Napoleonic Wars would be hopelessly incomplete without the consideration of the troops and achievements of Holy Russia’.

This is a new Study Group which aims to consider those achievements, not only against France, but also Sweden, Denmark and the Ottoman Empire. Also the failures, such as the reforms of Tsar Paul I. As well as researching the uniforms and organisations, the group will also study the characteristics of the Russian soldier, the drill, the effect of war on the Russian civilian, and any topic the members may wish to study.

It is planned that this research will be published in a newsletter - The Kiwer - and it is hoped that one day if enough members wish to put this research into practice, then a Russian re-enactment regiment may be formed.
