The battlefield of Chippawa is subject to varied development proposals, which will presumably destroy its historical value. The debate surrounding this issue has prompted Donald Graves to produced Red Coats and Grey Jackets. This 210-page, 100-illustration paper back edition, is without doubt an excellent read. Donald Graves - whose cover photograph gives the impression of him being an O.K. guy with a sense of humour - is one of the best North American Napoleonic period writers who unusually sticks to the North American theatre. Lundy’s Lane and the War of 1812 are amongst his other titles as well as ‘Merry Hearts make Light Days’ (previously reviewed in FE.)

The account of the battle itself is well researched from contem-porary sources and is packed with action and detail. However, the chapters leading up to this that cover the organisation, the equipment, tactics etc., are packed with detail that should be found in similar titles but is seldom included, and if it is, is usually hurried over and full of errors. Not so with this book. How many times can a British Brass 6pdr be fired with a service charge? Did the American habit of loading muskets with ball and buck prove more effective than a single ball? Don’t know? You haven’t read Red Coats and Grey Jackets!
