The ever-prodigious REDOUBT just keeps the models rolling out at a staggering pace. I don't know what those folks are doing over The Pond, but they're so prolific that they must have their sculptor chained to his workbench like a galley slave. Their new dismounted cavalry range is composed of 21 separate packs. Each pack has six two-part castings, legs and upper torso. These can be mixed and matched with an assortment of heads (which are included with the price of the pack) of which the customer can specify whether he wants kepi, bucktail, slouch, Hardee hats, Tennessee slouch, Havelocks, Texas kepis, Zouave tiger straw hats, Zouave fez, Zouave turbans, etc. Each series of packs contains figures wearing either shirts, shell jackets, sack coats or frock coats. Select your figures pack and specify the head type you want. For example; ACW 26, Command Advancing in shell jacket with officers kepi would give you an advancing unit suitable to lead most Union troops, or ACW 25, Command Advancing in shirt purchasaed with officers slouch hat would provide a nice advancing group to lead Confederate forces in the hot Mississippi summer. The figures shown here are from pack CAV6D, Dismounted Regular Cavalry Command with regular cavalry jackets. These are the 'typical' high-quality figurines that we have come to expect from Redoubt. The castings are relatively free of flash and exhibit wonderful animation. Though they are advertised as mix-and-match you will have to pay attention to the detail of each componentpart unless you want to make the same mistakes as I did. For example, I managed to place an upper torso with saber drawn on top of a lower body with the blade still in the scabbard. Ooops. Some body pairs just don't seem to mesh together that well so it takes a little patience (and perhaps modeling putty) to work out how to make everything fit properly. Also, as I've mentioned in previous Redoubt reviews, the necks on the separate heads will need to be trimmed down, unless of course you want a unit made up entirely of Don Knotts' look-alikes. Nevertheless, another highly recommended release from Redoubt. Redoubt Enterprises
