25mm ACW Flats

This is brilliant. From Windcatcher Graphics come a range of "Two-Sided Wooden Scale Miniatures" aptly titled 'WOODENS'. These are true 25mm flats, the term 'flats' meaning figurines designed with two-dimensions as opposed to the more conventional threedimensional castings on the market today. Woodens has a well-developed line of both French Foreign Legion and American Civil War models.

I received two packages, one being Union Infantry firing (item #100) and the second Confederate Cavalry of the 1st Virginia Regiment (item #103). 1 was immediately struck by both the sharp detail and the vividness of the colour. The infantry package contained four different poses, four kneeling/firing, three standing/ firing, two loading and one officer.

The cavalry package had far less variation offering only five figures of one pose throughout. While the miniatures are only about 2mm thick, the colour is transferred onto the edge, which provides an illusion of three dimensions.

They're not especially cheap with a package weighing in at about $17.00, but they're ready to go, fully painted and based. When ranked up into units they look great, providing a window to the early days of tin toy soldiers and wargaming. Quite nostalgic (I best stop before I get misty'...).
