review and photos by Curt Campbell
For this issue we have several manufacturers' submissions to examine. Darrell Combs of HOMEGROWN MINIATURES sculpts a range of ACW casting in 25, 54, 90, 120, and 200mm. Seen here is a selection of his 25mm range. Measuring 25M on the Barrett Scale, they place somewhat smaller than Foundry's range of castings. The animation is quite varied and interesting, but I found the detail to be rather soft and too rounded for my tastes. For example, the feet of most of the models seem to be either foreshortened or painfully flat, almost blending into the base completely. The facial detail, while adequate, seems basic and somewhat overblown. Nonetheless, like many castings, once painted and 'ranked up' these figures will be quite good. The prices for these figures are phenomenal, with 30 various infantry poses retailing at $21.95 that's about 73 cents per model! I think they would be great integrated with another manufacturer to provide variety and an inexpensive way to field those 'beefy' Union regiments. Homegrown's 25mm cavalry looks quite impressive from the samples received and from photos in the illustrated catalogue. Some spectacular casualty figures are available, with riders spilling off of their mounts, horses reeling under artillery fire, and dead cavalry on sculpted bases. The prices for the cavalry are also quite reasonable with 9 troopers and mounts for $21.95. Homegrown Figures
