During the past year Redoubt Miniatures has proved to be exceedingly prolific in its release of 25mm American Civil War castings. I had the pleasure of receiving their 20th Maine series for review. This came in two packages, one being the rank and file in firing and loading poses ACX 17, and the other the much mustach oed and bearded command element AC59. As the norm for Redoubt's various lines, most of their figures come with a variety of separate heads in order to allow a multitude of variation throughout the battle line. The proportions are very good, offering a slightly slimmer figure to that of Wargames Foundry; somewhat similar in fact to that of Dixon. I like the way the uniforms hang on the figures, giving a good lived-in and rumpled look.

The casting of Joshua Chamberlain is, in my opinion, the piece de resistance, as it depicts him drawing his saber and preparing for his fateful charge at Little Round Top. The drummer (extreme left in the photo) on the other hand looks as though he's suffering from eating too many over-ripe Pennsylvania cherries...

One thing to keep in mind with these castings is not to trim down the 'necks' of the separate heads too much, or conversely leave them too long. If you leave the neck too long the chap will look like he's in the midst of accidentally swallowing a minie bullet, while if you're too overzealous with the hobby knife the poor fellow will look like Ichabod Crane ducking a well-aimed pumpkin.
