Hemaly
by Lloyd Brown
This second part of a series written by Lloyd introduces us to some unique armor and weapons.-Editor The Undead: Hemaly, like most psionicists of Athas, lived alone in the wilderness to pursue her studies in peace. Far from the press of civilization, she could push the limits of psionic knowledge in her chosen disciplines. Although her primary discipline is clairsentience, she is a master of psychoporation as well. After reaching 20th level, she realized that she had just begun to understand the powers of the mind and that, after 80 productive years, she understood only a fraction of the powers of the mind. Hemaly decided to become a lich and began searching for the techniques by which a master of the Way could achieve this undead state. It was not hard for one with her talents to find out what she wanted. Before long, she was watching her body deteriorate in death while her spirit dwelt in a phylactery, awaiting its chance to return to the body. When she could finally make the return trip, her body was nearly skeletal, but her mind was still sharp and she could still move the bones around at will. It was not pretty, but that was something she was used to. It was good enough. Unknown even to the remaining sorcerer-kings, Hemaly owns at least three major merchant houses of the Tablelands. Each commissions or purchases for her priceless pieces of jewelry, which she collect annually as her share of the profits. With teleportation, the 1500 mile trip takes only a few moments. These items are used as receptacles or empowered with her favorite psionic powers. Between her vast store of PSP's, her receptacles and her items, Hemaly can teleport virtually at will and has a detailed knowledge of everybody and everything within a mile of her home among the ruins of Bodach, between both Balic and Nibenay. Any intruders who seem to be moving toward her home are spotted, identified, and thoroughly studied while still far away. The Weapon: In combat, Hemaly prefers to use a tough carru-hide whip instead of her touch attack. Any opponent struck with it is simultaneously wracked with an ego whip from the item's pool of PSP's. The whip will also rot cloth, leather or animal hide that it hits, causing items made from these materials to fall apart within 1-6 rounds. Magic items can save vs. disintegration at +3 to avoid being rotted. The rot is magic, not psionic ability. The whip is considered a +2 weapon. If combat goes against her, Hemaly will not hesitate to teleport away, but she will first attempt to entangle her weakest foe and drag that person off for interrogation so that she can recover any of her property the intruders take in her absence.
