National Infantry Museum
Fort Benning, GA (USA)

World War II to Vietnam

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

As you might imagine, the museum houses a considerable number of weapons, uniforms, and other gear. There is also a Medal of Honor gallery off to the side with photos, medals, and combat descriptions. With all the images and things written about WWII to modern, I picked out some of the more interesting tidbits in the displays.

This is part of an entire Airborne gallery shows a paradrop in progress. This is more like "modern" museum displays in which the exhibit mimics a diorama rather than display case after display case--and, I might add, it is effective.

Tucked away in a case sits a Moslem SS Fez from the 13th SS Gebirgs Division (Handschar-Kroatische Number 1). This example is a parade model of red with white insignia. Croatian Moslems were recruited by the Germans to help fight Tito's partisans.

The German Rakentenwerfer 43 (Puppchen) fires hollow-charge rockets. It has a hinged breechlock and used a spade handle grip for manual elevation. The rear sight graduated from 180 to 700 meters.

In one room was a 1934 Howie-Wiley "Belly Flopper." This low-profile vehicle was the prelude to the Jeep, and had its occupants lie flat on their stomach to drive. I thought I took a photo because it was an odd vehicle, but I guess not.

Canine Room

One room was devoted to man's best friend. Shown is a Veitnam-era dog that did something right to get a medal, and is now forever immortalized.
