The American Civil War:
Yanks and Rebs

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

This Union drum from the 2nd Division, V Corp had a blue background, upon which rested a generally white eagle, red-white-and-blue shield, and red banner with white lettering. The shield was cut horizontally, with the top third in blue and the bottom two-thirds in red and white vertical stripes. The eagle's talons extend below the shield, grasping arrows in the eagle's left talon. White ropes attach to brown rims, with the drum head being an off-white. This particular drum was used by drummer boy Williams, who died at the Battle of Second Bull Run.

This 1861 uniform was worn by Worn by Private Henry S. Murray of the 7th NY Militia, who rose to be Lt. Col. in the 124th NY Infantry. Although you can't see it, a "7" in tan was affixed to the kepi.

We normally think of grenades as a 20th century weapon, or perhaps, an 18th century weapon (from whence "grenadiers" comes from), but imagine the surprise of Johnny Reb on the receiving end of a Ketcham grenade. This featured wooden fins to ensure that when the metal part hit, a spring loaded plunger would strike the percussion cap and trigger the explosion. The US produced 90,000 during the American Civil War.

This was the uniform of Aaron Schilling, Co. A, 14th Battalion Georgia Artillery, who served in Atlanta during 1864. It is a rough tan to brown color with red piping on the cuff, buttons, and outside pants legs.

Behind the mannikan's head is cavalry pennant, unspecified as to which unit. Very little lighting in this display made it dark and hard to pick out, but details are three horizontal stripes (red on top, white in the middle and red on the bottom) with a blue field in the upper corner. The white stars in the blue field are four-pointed, with the points facing north, south, east, and west like a compass. The pennant is not rectangular, but swallowtailed.
