Yorktown Victory Monument A walkway connects the Visitor Center to the town, with a bridge over a ravine in the middle. Upon emerging atop the bluffs, the first thing to see is the Yorktown Victory Monument. Originally authorized in 1781, construction did not begin until the centennial in 1881--quite possibly the longest time needed to complete a public works project in US history. And it still looks like it's under construction. We continued northward into town, passing some of the houses that withstood the bombardment and subsequent development. More Yorktown Battlefield
