by Rudy Scott Nelson

Since the French occupation Forces used to occupy parts of the Ottoman Empire consisted of Armenian troops, I included these associated comments. The French Army sent troops to occupy the Syrian part of the old Ottoman Empire. The French from 1919-1921 tried several times to expand their influence northward into the Cilicia region. As a result several armed clashes occurred between French and Turks forces.

The ‘Armenian Legion’ at least 5,000 men joined the force was trained on Cyprus and assigned to the French Foreign Legion and the French Army of the Orient for operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. The men also included a contingent of Armenians from America. Small elements experienced combat at various times, often attached to British forces operating out of Egypt. The first significant sized unit participated in operations in Palestine in 1918.

The battle of Akara in Palestine on September 19, 1918 involved a frontal assault on Turkish defensive positions holding the mountain south of Nablus. Some reported indicate that 4 companies of troops were used. The positions were captured with a loss of 23 KIA and 65 WIA.
