Event Chronology 1905-1921

This is a timeline of key military events of the region. It does not include all of the political events or incidences of massacres.

1905

August = In Russian controlled Azerbaijan, fighting between Azeri citizens and Armenian Dashnaks for control of Shusha is bitter.
December = The Dashnaks attack the Azeri villages in Karabakh.

1906

January = After several successful raids the Azeri inflict a severe defeat on the Dashnaks at Karabakh
June = The Azeri of Shusha resisted a six day attack of the Armenian Dashnaks with Russian garrison artillery support. Eventually the Azeri received support from other Moslem villages. The fighting ended when the Russians replaced their garrison commander for the region.

1915

May 17 = Assault on Van. Armenians overrun Turkish positions. A few days later the Armenians turned over control of Van to the advancing Russians.
July 22 = The Turkish army launches a counter-attack and recaptures Van

1918

February 6 = Russian troops withdraw from the Armenian region. Turks begin a campaign and capture Garin, Drabizon, Yerzngan and Parpert within the next two weeks.
March 3 = Brest-Litovsk treaty gives Gars, Ardahan and Batoum to the Turks. German troops are invited to garrison Georgia.
March 12 = Russia turns over Gars to the Turks rather than the Armenians
March = A combined Dasnak Armenian and Bolshevik Russian Army attacked Azerbaijan forces in Baku.
March 23 = Turks capture Sarenghamish
April 7-8 = Armenian forces engage the Turks in the Ararat region
May 15 = Turks capture Alexandrapole
May 24 = Armenian forces launch counter-attacks against the Turks at Sardarabad, Pash Abaran and Gharakilisa. Bloody battles with Armenian victories and a General Turkish withdrawal.
May 26 = Georgia declares independence
May 27 = Azerbaijan declares independence
May 28 = Armenia declares independence and proclaims ‘Greater Armenia’
June 16 = Bolshevik (Georgian ?) troops in Baku attack Azerbaijan troops at Ganja. The attack is repulsed with the aid of Turkish reinforcements.
June 27 to July 1 = A combined Russian Bolshevik and Armenian force fights a combined Turkish-Azrei force for control of Geokchay. The Turkish-Azeri force won.
July 31 = British troops support an anti-Red Army movement to control Baku. British aims are to prevent Turkish or Azeri control of the area
July to September = Turkish-Azeri forces conduct operations against the Armenians in the areas of Ganja, Karabakh, Zangezur and Nakhchivan
September-October = Russian Red Army forces invade Georgia along the Black Sea coastline. The Bolsheviks initially captured Sukhum but a fierce Georgian counter-attack recaptured the city.
September 15 = The Turks capture the key city of Bakoun (Baku )
October 21 = Armenians capture the Lori Pambag from the ???
November = The Azerbaijan timelines report the Georgian-Armenian as starting now.
November 18 = Armenians capture Gharakilisa from Georgia
December 2 = Armenians capture Alexandrapole from Georgia (?)
December 5 = Georgian forces capture Akhalkalak and push into Armenian controlled Lori though Georgians insist that it is part of Georgia.
December 13 = Georgian-Armenian War starts with a massive invasion by the Armenians. The Armenians advance against limited resistance.
December 31 = British (pro-Armenian) intervention halts the Georgian-Armenian War.

1919

May 2 = The Armenian army captures key railroads connecting Aracha and Saenghamish
May 9 = The Armenian army captures Mertineng from the ??
May 20 = The Armenian army captures Nakichevan from the ??
June = Armenian forces invade Azerbaijan. A bitter fight occurs at Shusha which changes control three times but ends the campaign in Azeri control.
July = White Russian Army forces under Denikin combat Independence minded mountain towns in the Northern Caucus, then advance to the borders of Georgia and Azerbaijan.
July = Georgia and Azerbaijan sign a mutual defense pact to guard against Russian White Army raids. The Armenians sign a mutual defense pact with the Russian White Army.
August = Armenian Regular units attacked 46 villages near Serur and Nahcivan in Azerbaijan. ‘Firing from armored wagons along the railroad.
November-December = Azeri and Armenian forces clash over control in Zangezur

1920

March 22 = Azeri and Armenian forces clash for control of Askaran
March – April = A Russian Red Army Offensive against Russian White Army troops under Denikin destroys the White Army.
April 1 = According to the Armenians the Azeri Tartars attack Armenian villages in the Shoushi area. Additional conflicts break out in the Nagormo-Kharabakh area.
April-May = Hunchak party revolts inside Armenia hampers Armenian external operations. The Hunchaks are eventually suppressed.
April 6 = Regular Armenian troops launch raids against Azerbaijan Moslem villages in the regions of Vedi, Ordubad and Zengezor.
April 27 = Russian Red Army troops enter Baku (the Azeri capital)Azerbaijan becomes part of the Soviet bloc
May 7 = The Red Army invades Georgia from the Azerbaijan border despite a recently signed mutual support pact. The Georgians push back the initial assault
May 20 = Azeri revolt fails. Russian Red Army kills over 40,000 Azeri citizens
May 23 = Armenian Cavalrymen (200 men), attack the town of Cebecali near Uluhanli in Azerbaijan
June 27 = Armenian irregulars raid the villages of Hacibayram and Haberbegli in Azerbaijan
September 23 = According to the Armenians, the Nationalist Turks launch a surprise invasion of Armenia.
October 20-26 = The Sourmalia campaign rages. The Armenians eventually push back the Turks.
November 29 = According to the Armenians, an Azeri army with support from the Red Army and the Hunchaks capture Ichevan.
December 2 = Armenia signs a treaty with Turkey. Also the Armenia Republic is dissolved and the Soviet of Armenia is proclaimed.
December 25 = Dissident groups merge at Zanezour and declare an independent and non-Bolshevik country.

1921

May 16 = The Moscow Treaty between the Soviets including Armenia and Turkey is signed. The cities of Gars and Ardahan are given to Turkey. The city of Nakhichevanis returned to Azerbaijan.
