Spanish Uniforms mid-late 1700s

by Rudy Scott Nelson

The Spanish uniforms were standardized but can provide colorful formations if the various types of units are fielded together. Different colors were designated for Regular units stationed in Europe, Regular units stationed in the American colonies and the various militia units found in the colonies. The chart below provides the basic data for units which fought in the American area of operations.

There were variations within the unit especiall y in regards to leggings and breeches. For example, artist illustrations and reports show the Louisiana Regiment as wearing blue , red and white breeches. Also in most cases, white gaiters or stockings were used in hot, dry conditions, while black gaiters or spatterdashes were used in colder or rainy weather. The Buttons and Hat Lace were the same color. The New Orleans Militia Battalion entry includes the various companies of Rangers and Grenadiers which were divided by ethnic background. Waistcoats and Turnbacks were in regimental distinctives as given under Lapels.
