Using Hordes of Things The scenario devised was loosely based upon the Iliad, Homer's story of the fight between the Achaeans and the Trojans in front of the gates of Troy. The Tale For those unfamiliar with the epic work the story starts with Achilles going into a deep sulk as Agamemnon takes Achilles prize (a beautiful girl) away to replace a young girl the Gods have forced Agamemnon to return to her Father. Zeus convinces Agamemnon that now is the time for Troy to fall so he brings the Achaeans out to do battle with the Trojan hosts, without the help pf their mighty hero Achilles. This leads to a series of fierce encounters spread over 3-4 days which ends up with the Trojans almost driving the Greeks back into the sea. Then Patrocles, Achilles best "friend" (well they are Greeks) dying at the hands of Hector. Achilles returns to the battle with a fervid rage almost single handed drives the Trojans back into Troy where at the main gate he meets Hector and with the help of Athena slaughters him in revenge for the death of Patrocles. During this single combat Hector realises that he cannot beat both Achilles and the Gods (Athena) so gives up the fight allowing Achilles and easy victory -– you cannot beat the will of the gods, and this is the sense and feeling that I tried to replicate whilst retaining a series of enjoyable games. The game was fought over a series of 3 battles, each with 3x24 point armies made up of "standard troop types" supplemented as follows: Battle of Troy Wargame Scenario and Rules Back to Those Damn Dice Troy Special Issue Table of Contents Back to Those Damn Dice List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 2004 by Rolfe Hedges This article appears in MagWeb.com (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
