Enemy at the Gates

Movie Review

I just saw the movie Enemy at the Gates. I must say that I was impressed. As an amateur historian with a significant interest in WW II I had to see this film. The story behind the movie is the epic battle of Stalingrad.
As you probably know, both Stalin and Hitler had declared that the city would be taken at all costs. Neither of these megalomaniacs gave any thought to the cost in human life and resources that their obsession would incur. The film clearly shows how the Russians threw thousands of men and women into the maelstrom to hold the city for their "beloved leader," Josef Stalin. Talk about an ego! In one scene the Russians charge into the teeth of the German line and are slaughtered. As the poorly trained conscripts break the NKVD are there to cut down them down as they flee. So much for the Socialist Brotherhood! Anyway, now back to the movie.

Enemy at the Gates is essentially the story of the duel that was fought in the ruble of Stalingrad between the best snipers in the Russian and German armies. This is definitely what I call an "edge of your seat" film. Make time to see it. That's and order, comrade. It's well worth the price of admission.
