by Matt Fritz
Matt, Tom, Charlie, and Kirby played a Battleground WWII game set in the blizzard conditions of the Stalingrad kessel. Desperate for supplies the Germans tried an airdrop, but three canisters fell close to the Russian lines. Both sides sent a force to seize the priceless supplies. Matt and Tom played the Russians (6 T-34s, 1 76mm ATG, four squads, and a HMG), while Charlie and Kirby took the Germans (2 Panthers, three squads, 5 half-tracks, 1 half-track w/ 75mm gun). The Russians split their force and raced along the edges of the board, hoping to get the Panthers in crossfire since they needed flank shots to penetrate their armor. The Germans sent the Panthers up the middle of the board while the infantry and half-tracks fanned out. While Tom's T-34 platoon was engaged by Kirby's Panther's, Matt's T-34 platoon scored a lucky hit and burned one of the Panthers, then immobilized two of the half-tracks. The momentum shifted in the Russians favor as their tank riders leapt off and set up their machine guns to engage the German half-tracks. But the Germans fought back, trashing Tom's T-34 platoon and infantry squads. Only a lucky roll made one of Tom's squads' fanatics and prevented a rout. Charlie's half-tracks raced to the canisters and jumped out to get them. But then Tom's anti-tank gun opened fire and wreck two half-tracks. This was the last straw for the Germans who saw their forces destroyed, leaving only the Panther. It was a close fought battle that resulted in a marginal Russian victory.
