Gimme Shelter!

WWII Desert Battle Reports

by Matt Fritz

We played an interesting desert battle with Charlie commanding the DAK, Matt and John commanding the Brits. Both sides were trying to get to shelter of a caravan stop located at the center of the board. John's Humbers arrived first and tried to drive into the courtyard. BAM! The vehicle wouldn't fit! So he drove around the backside of the building and was shocked to find German infantry leaping from their trucks and racing for the courtyard wall. He started to pepper them with MG fire but Charlie's recon platoon spotted him and destroyed his armored cars with accurate autocannon fire.

This led to a vicious infantry fight for control of the courtyard. The Germans seized a foothold inside and sent a British flanking maneuver reeling back with heavy casualties. Finally Matt's infantry arrived and returned fire on the Germans. After exchanging grenades and bullets Matt took control of the courtyard with a successful bayonet charge. But this left the British in an impossible situation.

The German armored cars drove about with impunity destroying the British Bren carriers and forcing the infantry to cower helplessly in the smoke from their blazing vehicles. The British were on the brink of surrender when both sides received reinforcements. KJ's Matildas came waddling forward and engaged the German PzJgr I's but could not arrive before Kirby's Pz IV. Kirby drove right through the wall into the courtyard firing HE at anything he could see. The British scattered like ants.

A fresh German squad charged into the breach to support the tank but was cut to pieces by small arms fire from all directions. A series of desperate close assaults followed that left the tank immobilized directly on top of the well and the British infantry spent. Eventually the Matildas would get to the courtyard to deliver the coup de grace to the Pz IV, but the British were in no shape to claim victory.
