by John Burke and Phil Willows
Battlefleet Gothicby John Burke The infamous Outflanked Scenario was attempted again, this time with larger fleets. The Imperial Fleet of Burke and Bennett had 1770 points and the Chaos Fleet of Phil and Tony had 2350 points. The Chaos fleet now boasted 2 Desolators, 1 Despoiler, 2 Styx, 2 Hades, 1 Murder, and 5 Infidels. The Imperial fleet glistened with Retribution, Mars, Cobra, Gothic, and Lunar class ships. The Chaos fleet was broken down into 2 Squadrons. Once again, the first squadron entered the sector on time and in the correct position. The other squadron again showed up a turn late but still in position to support the first squadron. The Imperials had a horrendous time getting their fleet around. Failing leadership tests left and right throughout the game. Even when the Imperials could get their torpedoes reloaded, a clear path through the blast markers couldn't be found and wave after wave detonated prematurely. The Chaos fleet drew first blood by taking out all the Imperial escorts in one turn. During one hellacious turn half the Chaos fleet achieved Lock-On status. Captain "Piss'm Off" McBride shot 8 for 8 with one ship alone. Ironically, there were none of the spectacular explosions that highlighted the previous play of this scenario. In this case, most of the hulks harmlessly drifted off the board. Even the Nova Cannons were eerily quiet. One shot exploding within sight of the Chaos ship "Torment". The carrier arm of the Chaos fleet showed their true muscle this time. Fighters sent out to screen the larger ships kept Imperial Torpedoes at bay while Chaos Bombers found their mark time and again. Only the Chaos' Murder cruiser was crippled. The remainder of the Chaos fleet received only scratches. The Imperial fleet was able to disengage with their battleship The Eldar Menaceby Phil Willows Matt Fritz and Phil Willows took the Chaos fleet. John Burke and Charlie Keller took the Eldar fleet. The Chaos fleet contained ships picked specifically for their Weapons Batteries. The Eldar fleet contained 4 cruisers and a ton of escorts. The tone of the game was set early. Matt caught one of Charlie's cruisers out of position and facing the wrong way. The combined firepower of 3 Carnage Class cruisers left the Eldar's theory of superiority in serious doubt. My 3 Murder Class cruisers scored a lucky hit on Charlie's other cruiser taking out its Holofield Generator (a form of cloaking device). The following turn she was obliterated. Eldar ships have no normal shields to absorb damage. The Eldar did manage to take out one of my Murder Class cruisers. The resulting explosion when the warp drive went took out two of my escorts. Matt and I then turned out attention to their escorts covering the retreat. With unbelievable shooting, Matt proceeded to leave a trail of stains where a curtain of escorts once stood. John and Charlie were able to disengage their 2 remaining cruisers and 4 escorts. At least John was able to survive with a ship...one with cameras showing Charlie's devious early withdrawal from the battle area. I guess that's the nature of raiders. This was the second consecutive crushing defeat inflicted on the Eldar. Now there are reports of an Ork fleet massing in the Beta Quadrant. Stay tuned. More Battle Reports
