1999 Patrol in Germany

U-Boat Tour: Saturday

By Harry Cooper

We can neither show photos of the place we visited Saturday morning nor even write about it. This is a place that is absolutely off-limits by the German Navy to all -- but we spent some hours in this place with a slide presentation of the history of it followed by a personal tour into every corner of it. What was this place? Why are we not allowed to talk about it show it to you? Sorry - but we hope to go back again in the year 2000 and if you are with us, you will see it too. Photos were allowed - but I just am not allowed to print them or say where we were.

We rode to Bremerhaven for lunch at a nice little restaurant, then we went aboard the former Type XXI sub. U-2540, flow a museum ship named WILHELM BAUER (photo below) in honor of the 'Father of German Submarines.' We also toured lightships, minesweepers and an S-Boat.

It was a leisurely afternoon - but a sad afternoon too, because we all knew that with tomorrow, we were all heading in our different directions to our homes.

We had met new friends that we would remember all our lives and we had seen things that to most, only appear in books. It was a great time and many have written to tell me what a great job I did with this tour. Thanks -- but it really wasn't me that put this great tour together -- it was many SHARKHUNTERS Members like:

    HANS-GEORG HESS (125-LIFE-1985)
    GERD THXTER (194-LIFE-1986)
    WOLDEMAR 'BOBBY' TRIEBEL (197-1986)
    OTTO WESTPHALEN (329-1987)
    ERNST GOTHLING (1225-LIFE-1989)
HANNES ESKEN (1601-1990) and (EH 67-1994)
    'HAI' MASSMANN (4522-1995)
    VOLKMAR KONIG (5428-1997)
    PETER TAMM (5649-1998)
    HEIKO HERMANS (5651-1998)
    JUNE WHITE (5922-1999)
    Herr KOSEMANN (new Member)
    GUNTHER LEONHARDT (EH 820- 1998)

To all these Members - VIELEN DANK! I really appreciate all the help, assistance and guidance these Members have given me in the forming of our 'Patrols in Germany'. I certainly hope that I have not forgotten anyone who has helped and if I have forgotten anyone, please let me know and I will add your name in KTB # 143.
