Enigma Triton Codes (End)

by Charles A. Thompson

We continue with JUDE’s comments on breaking of the ENIGMA TRITON codes by the Allies:

“I have been told that the Raiders (Hilfkrüzern) used the Aussland Code as opposed to the Heimat Code and not one of them was located as a result of code-breaking. It is said that ATLANTIS was located as a consequence of ENIGMA penetration but at the time of her discovery she was refueling a U-Boat, which operated under Heimat Code protocols - as did PYTHON, which was caught with the ATLANTIS survivors on board, while refueling a U-Boat several days later.

I feel that the absolute certainty with which the various communications people rejected the idea that ENIGMA had been penetrated is evidence of their certainty of the security of their communications. Basically, they felt it was impossible to compromise their codes and cyphers using ordinary means then available. I don’t doubt their certainty was well placed.

What they did not contemplate was treason.

I doubt we will ever learn just who did what, in behalf of whom or why - and one wonders who would be better off if we did. However it’s a fascinating mystery and like any mystery, its solution is compelling. Perhaps buried deep in the archives of the KGB or possibly MI-5 or MI-6; the DUXIEME Bureau; or the OSS are the answers to the questions. Perhaps they are to be found in the old records of the Reich Security Service or even the GESTAPO.

In this day and age of who knows what ‘secrets’ may surface tomorrow or the next day. Of the major powers only the British and the Soviets - it would appear - did not use some form of the ENIGMA machine. The British had, it seems, an affinity for coding sheets and the Soviets - as was their wont - did their own thing. From what I have read, the higher the level of command, the more difficult and more intricate their codes.”
