The Twin Towers Hotel

Standing proudly on the steep hillside overlooking Highway 101, across from Universal Studios, is the newest gem in the crown of the Hollywood skyline the Twin Towers Hotel. Construction of LAs newest luxury hotel was halted just before 1995 by petitions from uncooperative private residents of the Hollywood Hills area, who refused to vacate their property to make way for construction - despite generous monetary incentives from the project's backer, Ravenous Studios.

It wasn't until late 1995 that the final parcel of property was acquired and ground was broken on the new hotel.

As its name implies, Twin Towers is a dual-tower construction. When fully completed, it will stand 300 feet high, providing a dramatic view of the Greater LA area and even some of the San Fernando Valley.

At present, only one of the towers is complete and open for business. Normally, Ravenous would not have a luxury resort hotel opened under anything but full capacity, but investor demand for recouping lost revenues (from all the early delays) has convinced Ravenous to open the West Tower early to catch the 1997 tourist season.

The superstructure of the East Tower is complete, and most of the exterior and interior walls are up, but portions of the tower's sleek, black and green glass and steel skin are missing and covered by tarpaulins to keep out the weather. Plumbing and main lighting are functional on most floors. Emergency lighting and pumps are fully functional. The elevator situation is still... well... iffy.

The 17th floor is of great interest to us because the Hotel's swimming pool and recreation facility reside on it. The pool and recreation area -- which includes hot tubs and an open air cafe -- is actually suspended between the main towers, 180 feet above the gardens. This provides a superb view of Universal Citywalk across the 101. And a fine view of the lights of greater LA.

Other than the ground floor, this is the only physical walkway to the East tower.

Unfortunately, the safety railings are no good if the whole thing should plummet to the ground....

GMs, if you haven't guessed it by now, a lot of innocent civilians are going to eat it in this one. Practice your disaster movie sound effects in the mir, ror before play to ensure that you have a nice, convincing "Panicked Mob Scream" ready for your players, enjoyment. Keep something handy to simulate loud explosions as well. A couple sticks of fresh celery make an ideal tool for producing the sound of snapping bones.
