Victorian Colonial Books

by Capt. John Harrel

Michael Barthorp's THE ANGLO-BOER WARS (Blandford, $18.95) is now out and is every bit as good as I expected. Conflicts between the Afrikaners and the British from 1815 to 1902 are covered. All but about 25 pages are devoted to the two major wars. Illustrated with many photographs not seen previously by this reviewer, I highly recommend this la test Barthorp work.

THE MEN OF THE 24TH is the title of an informative paperback volume by Toby Giese. This book is an excellent companion to Norman Holme's THE SILVER WREATH. Really a series of mini- biographies of officers and men who served with the 24th in the Zulu War, Giese has gone into serious research on the men and photos in which they appear. He has even corrected some previous identification errors. A handy book on the Zulu War and, especially, some of its personalities. It is available for $17.95 plus 20% postage from Modellers Mart, 2071 Range Rd~, Clearwater, FL 33575.

Stuart Asquith, editor of the "Observation Post' column in MILITARY MODELLING has recently produced the MILITARY MODELLING GUIDE TO WARGAMING. This paperback back covers all eras of wargamsing, including Colonials. Each chapter has a good bibliography and there is an extensive list of anufacturers at the end. Published by Argus for $12.95.

I expected Osprey's latest release, THE BRITISH ARMY ON CAMPAIGN 1816-1902 (1): 1816- 1853, by Michael Barthorp and Pierre Turner (color plates) to be of little Colonial interest.... WRONG! Almost the entire volume is devoted to pure Colonial subjects (albeit of the 'early' period). The Sikh War, Kaffir Wars, 1st China War, 1st Afghan War, Maori War and French-Canadian Rebellion are all covered. I can hardly wait for the next volume in the series!!!

Due to be released while this issue is at the printer is VICTORIA'S WARS, by Peter C. Smith (Spellmount Ltd., 19.95 Pounds). This book highlights seven classic British Battles from Guirat (India, 1849) to Tamaii (Sudan, 1864). Only The Alma is a non-Colonial battle. This promises to be a good title. Watch for it in your bookshops.

I as temporarily out of stock of the VMS Zulu War Special issue but more are on the way, so if you order one, I'll hang onto your order and ship your copy to you when I get them back in stock.
