Tatars or Tartar

The name is derived from Tata or Dada, a Mongolian tribe that inhabited modern north-eastern Mongolia in the 5th Century. It was later extended to include almost any Asian nomadic invader. The similarity to the word Tartarus (a Greek word with ties to Hades, which was the major underworld of Greek mythology) most likely influenced its use among Europeans instead of other names.
