The Army of
Alexander the Great

India 326-323 BC

by Paul S. Dobbins

Historical Themes

The army that invaded India was potentially the largest of the Macedonian armies in these lists, but we'll keep it at 32,000. It is clear from the sources that the army's morale was deteriorating, but it was better armed. The hypaspists become the argyraspists. A seventh brigade of phalangites was added, here assumed to be pezhetairoi. This army is a good combined arms force, adding some more muscle back into the previous list, along with Indina elephants and longbow power.

After Alexander defeated Porus, Indian allies flocked to his banner, including the in-the-future formidable general Chandragupta. This list has a relatively modest contingent of approximately 9,600 longbows plus supporting elephants.

The sizable camp followers contingent was added to model the return to Babylon after the army mutinied. More could be done to downgrade morale, but that may be left to others.

Notes

  • Prodomoi and Hetairoi may wedge.
  • There is no reference to a large body of camp followers engaging the enemy. Rather, the severe attrition among the camp followers crossing the Gedrosian desert is described in the sources. They are listed here to provide variety, especially for scenario games. They are not counted in the scale calculation.
  • Minimums apply only if an Indian ally is selected.
