Armies for
Ancient Chariot Era Warfare
by Terry Gore
An empire in its own right, the Hittite armies were successful, for the most part, striving to remain in control of an area in constant flux. The Hittites were originally from northeast of the Caucasus, pushing to the east and south. One of the Hittite leaders, Murshilish I, managed to actually overrun the Old Babylonians, pushing back his enemies and eventually moving into Syria. This was about as far as they got. For the next few hundred years, internal problems would plague the Hittites. Best known for being the losers to Ramses at the Battle of Kadesh in 1285 BC, the Hittite Empire fought for centuries against Mitanni, Egypt, Syria and Assyria until finally being subjugated by the strangely named and elusive 'Sea Peoples'. The Hittites had large numbers of medium chariots with a lancer and an archer in each, providing a powerful shock as well as missile weapon. Upgrading them to Elite status allows for even more hitting and fighting power. Use the skirmishers to screen your chariot assaults. The foot is mostly used in supporting roles or to hold hill positions. A major chariot attack along the entire front, supported by close order foot can be a fearsome sight to face. This is a good army for any player. Enemies: Syro-Canaanite, Mycenaean, New Kingdom Egyptian, Assyrian, Sea Peoples, and Post Mycenaean Greek. More Armies for Ancient Chariot Era Warfare
