Elamite 1500-639BC

Armies for
Ancient Chariot Era Warfare

by Terry Gore

The kingdom of Elam comprised two distinct regions, the plain of Susa and the highlands of Anshan and its ruler was called “king of Anshan and Sushan”. The Elamites managed to overrun Babylonia until defeated in 1120 BC. A resurgent Elam was a constant thorn in the side of Assyria, often in alliance with Babylonia, from the 9th Century BC until defeated in 639 BC. It was the Elamite and Arab forces that took advantage of Assyria's problems and invaded from both the north and south. After years of bitter warfare, the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal virtually destroyed the Elamites, but exhausted his own resources in the process.

The Elamites' use of heavy chariots, augmented by large numbers of archers for close supporting fire and good quality close order spearmen proved a tough enemy to face by contemporaries. The heavy chariots are the attack forces of this army. Use them on the flanks or in the centre, with plenty of supporting archer fire. Skirmish infantry and skirmish cavalry should be used to screen the chariots from enemy missiles until they are in close range. The close order foot is useful to hold areas of the field and to support the chariot attacks. This is a good, fun army for any level of player.

Enemies: Later Babylonians and Assyrians.
