As with the Byzantine army, I wanted to have a specific organization. My existing tabletop army was composed of units drawn from the Danube River area of the northern Balkans. The core of the army consisted of units which served in this area during the reign of Diocletian (284-305 AD). Later, most of these units were part of the field armies. During the 5th Century, some of the units were still recorded as components of the field armies. Thus they could be included in Middle and Late Imperial Roman, Patrician Roman and Early Byzantine.
