Frederick's Battles - a Guide to Wargaming the Age of Frederick the Great, 1740-1763 by Greg Savvinos, Tony Mathers, and Michael Bornstein, reviewed by Craig Martelle. Frederick's Battles is not an independent game system, but uses the sound (and tried and true) Napoleon's Battles from Avalon Hill as its foundation. If you are a Napoleon's Battles fan, or if you have a copy gathering dust in your closet, break it out and take a look at this module. The first page is for rules modifications. That's it - just one page. If you don't want to learn a new rules set, but want to expand into new era's, Frederick's Battles answers your cries for help. The next 15 pages are the information charts you need to build your armies. It gives everything on the forces and the generals of the period to build a historically accurate army. The next 30 pages are filled with scenarios. Here's the information you need to refight battles from the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Look for tons of great information and full color maps to allow you to recreate this very interesting period. And since we're talking about the Seven Years' War, Regimental Colours Seven Years' War flag line is filling up nicely. I won't review them as I want the Rebel Yell to remain unbiased. Of course, I think they are the best and most complete line on the market today, but I do all the artwork for and a lot of the marketing of Regimental Colours flags. If anyone else would like to review Regimental Colours flags, drop Rhett Scott or me a line. And finally - look for a new publication called The Gauntlet to come on line in the United States in the very near future. The Gauntlet is the UK's answer to Hal Thinglum's MWAN, although it is published only quarterly. It has a British (Scottish) flavor and is chocked full of no nonsense historical miniature rules, scenarios, and reviews. Mark Hannam is the editor and I'll be taking the USA side of promoting and co-publishing it. Look for about a 100-page MWAN style magazine with lots of news about the hobby and a number of rule sets to play. All eras are delved into. The magazine has been in existence for three years now and has been kept a secret from the American audience. Well that secret is out! Look for promotional copies to be sent out over the next few months with subscription and advertising information. For the discriminating MWAN shopper, The Gauntlet is a nice complement.
