Old Duffer's Book Corner

Russia's Military Way
To The West

Christopher Duffy
in a limited edition
by Terence Wise

From the Imbibing Bibliophile himself

Gareth Simon's Big Reprinting Brother Terry Wise has once again pre-printed one of Duffy's excellent works and as my first edition is creaking at the seams I snap up a reserve copy. This splendid book takes us from the world of the Streltsy to the dawn of the Alexandrine intervention. Duffy sees the Russians in all their strengths and weaknesses and clearly demonstrates that the typical (Frederick derived?) model is not always applicable, nor are the Russians unchanging.

The history fastens on a number of key leaders and army commanders against a backdrop of what in any other state would have been a permanent succession crisis. Munnich, Rumyantsev, Chernyshev, Apraxsin, Fermor, Buturlin, Potemkin are all here together with excellent summaries of their campaigns which at times look almost Napoleonic (but only against his Marshals). There are a number of Turkish campaigns and the major intervention in the Seven Years War, together with detail on Suvorov's actions in Switzerland. A very entertaining book, which is at the same time a work of considerable scholarship. Get it now before it goes out of print yet again.
