Here Is What You Need To Do!

by Anders Fager, Jerry Malone & Niek van Diepen

Note that some of this stuff is slightly manic, but what the heck!

1. Loss Charts

The loss charts printed here will be available shortly at www.multimanpublishing.com and reflect the latest research by The NBS-Team's European Branch. There are not many drastic changes in them, but all known brigadiers are added and some strengths a bit adjusted.

2. Counters

a. A Kellermann counter has been issued, a 4-rated commander that must always stack with the French 2-Cav. Kellermann accepts orders for 2-Cav only and he is not replaced, should he be killed. The Kellermarm counter is available on the 1997 Replacements and Variants countersheet. All counters will be available as a PDF file, suitable for printing and mounting, at www.multimanpublishing.com.

b. The 9th Line in Lapoye's division should be designated the 91st Line.

c. Both the French 1-C and 3-Cav should be A sized.

d. Chambarlhac should be rated I (with a replacement rated 2).

e. The French CAV artillery unit should be redesigned as belonging to L Corps.

f. The Sticher-S brigade should have morale A.

g. Designate one Austrian Skirmisher "Hardegg" and use it as the Austrian Pioneer unit.

h. The true enthusiast should of course correct the following Austrian Ranks.

General der Kavallerie (GdK or four Stars): Melas

Feldmarschal-Leutnant (FML or three stars): Hadik, Kaim, Morzin, Elsnitz, Ott, Schellenberg, Vogelsang and O'Reilly

Generalmajor (Two Stars); Zachs and Gottesheim

Colonel: Frimont.

3. Game Rules Additions

a. Force the Austrians to enter at Tete du Point as if they were lined up along an off-map road in one long one-unit-perhex column. They were, after all, managing the army through Alessandria and over a single bridge, just west of the map. Ott's column must enter after all other units have entered.

b. The French 28th Line and Austrian St. Julien units are directly subordinated to Lannes and Melas respectively and accept orders as an independent cavalry brigade does.

c. The redesigned French CAV artillery unit always sets up with L Corps.

d. If the French Player wishes to fight on after he has managed to get Napoleon killed, Victor is in next in line to assume command.

e. There were some French detachments hovering just south of the map-edge that had O'Reilly chasing flank threats most of the day. Therefore, in order to get victory points for Spinetta, Cassina Grossa or St. Giuliano Vecchio, the Austrian player must have one division exit along the Novi Road at 31.01 with orders to "guard the south flank." The Austrian player might recall this division at any time and it will return at 31.01 one turn after the recall is made with an accepted order to move to Army HQ.

f. Option 2.4 gives the French player only Lapoype's division and nothing else for a cost of one VP only.

g. In all scenarios the French army has an anti-initiative of -2 up to and including the 8.30 AM turn and after that an antiinitiative of -1 until Napoleon enters the map.

h. Ott's wing functions as a corps consisting of Vogelsang, Gottesheim, and Schellenberg's divisions. Ott may not attach other divisions to his command or detach divisions on divisional goals.

i. The Austrian "Hardegg" pioneers functions for all purposes as an A morale skirmisher, with the exception that it pays movement costs as if it were an infantry line. During the game Hardegg may build one bridge over any tributary hex-side. It does so by moving to a tributary hex and stating what hex-side it intends to bridge. The hex bridged to may contain a French unit, and if the Hardegg unit is still alive and in place in the start of the next Austrian turn the bridge is up and may be crossed by any Austrian unit the same turn. Once the bridge is up the Hardegg counter must remain in either of the two bridged hexes. French infantry may destroy the bridge by winning a close combat (unopposed or not) in either of the two bridge hexes.

k. National Characteristics: The Austrians of '00 These rules are a bit experimental, but they bring out the idiosyncrasies of the Austrian army in, we hope, a simple but realistic way.

  • Most of the Austrian artillery was dispersed out of Melas' control. Therefore Austrian artillery units may never fire together with any other artillery units, even if stacked together, except against a target that is adjacent to all firers.
  • Austrian infantry relied heavily on linear tactics and was on the whole not as agile as the French. Therefore Austrian infantry may only enter close combat using column while attacking across bridges. The (not applied to attackers in Column) entry on the Morale Modifiers Close Combat table never applies to Austrian infantry. Furthermore Austrian columns have only 7 MP. As the Austrians were quite at a loss how to manage large bodies of cavalry multiple Austrian Cavalry units may never charge together.
  • While being world leading in chaotic staff-work, the Austrian generals were brave and very experienced fighters that led from the front. Therefore count all Austrian divisional commanders as having one point higher Command Rating than printed when it comes to rallying stragglers and affecting morale checks.
