Introduction

During WW II, the privately published magazine Our Navy was at least as popular in the US fleet as the official All Hands. Our Navy magazine died in the late 1960s, but many photos that show up today in Warship International still bear the Our Navy credit. A couple of years ago, I obtained several issues of the magazine from around the end of WW II. In one postwar issue I found a fascinating article, whose implications seem to have remained hidden for decades. Our Navy, Vol., XL #20, Mid-March 1946, covers a planned joint US/Russian effort in the North Pacific in 1945. In fact, Japan collapsed so fast after the atomic bombs that such a joint operation did not occur. This operation is almost forgotten, and is not even covered in Morison's official history of the Navy in WW II. The article in Our Navy magazine is the only mention of the operation I have ever found. The Naval Historical Center has recently published a monograph on Project Hula, but I was not able to obtain it in time for the deadline of this article. What I present here is obtained from other sources, and from people who do already have the monograph. More Operation Hula
