Captain Eugene Labaume was a mapping engineer on the staff of Viceroy Eugene (4th Corps), and his Relation Complete de la Campagne de Russia en 1812 (1814) was the first published account of the campaign. Although it provides considerable insight into the operations of the 4th Corps, it is less insightful with regard to other details and operations. Colonel D. M. Buturlin served in the 4th Cavalry Corps of the Russian army during the campaign. His Histoire Militaire de la Campagne de Russia en 1812 (1824) is the first published Russian account. It is considered the most detailed and authoritative account from the Russian side. General Count Philippe de Segur was Assistant Prefect of the Emperor's Palace during the campaign, and his Histoire de Napoleon et de la Grande Armee pendant l'annee 1812 (1824) is considered the most famous, though far from accurate, account of the campaign. General Count Gaspard Gourgaud was senior staff officer to the Emperor during the campaign, and his Histoire de Napoleon et la Grande Armee en Russie pendant l'annee 1812, par M. Le General Comte de Segur et examen critique par Le General Gourgaud (1825), a page-by-page critique of Segur, is unabashedly pro-Napoleon. Marquis de Chambray served as a captain in the Imperial Guard Artillery His three-volume Histoire de l'expedition de Russie (1825) is considered the first serious history of the campaign. Six years in the writing, it was the first to take advantage of Marshal Berthier's (Napoleon's chief of staff) papers. The author was also granted access to all official French papers in 1819.
