200th AnniversaryRevolutionary France hoped to liberate Ireland in 1797, but the invasion force was thwarted by storms. The only French able to land went ashore in Wales, not Ireland, led by an American from South Carolina. Many of the invaders had been "liberated" themselves -- from Parisian jails.
