The Mornerska Hussars

Regimental Organization

By Gustav P. Bergman

In 1813 the regiment consisted of eight squadrons. Each squadron nominally numbered 100 troopers. These were led by:

    1 Commanding officer or Ryttmastare
    1 Lieutenant
    1 Sergeant Major
    4 NCOs

    each squadron also had

      1 Bugler
      1 Farrier
      1 Surgeon

Horses were supposed to be "strong and slender" and between 4 and 7 years old. Greys were specified for the bugler's and farrier's horses.

Old-style Uniforms

As with the rest of the Swedish army, the Marnerska Hussars had somewhat anachronistic uniforms. In fact, they were almost identical to the original uniform of 1757, and the resemblance to Prussian hussars of the Seven Years War is striking.

A Variety of Weapons

In 1813 the hussars in the Swedish army were equipped with the Model 1759 cavalry saber. The troopers had a scabbard of white metal, while officers were black leather with three brass fittings.

Each hussar had two Model 1807 pistols, one smoothbore and one rifled. The latter had a loose butt and was used by the hussars (as well as by the dragoons) for long-range exchanges.

No regimental Banner

The Marnerska Hussars and other light cavalry units of the Swedish army had no regimental banners during the Napoleonic Wars.
