Napoleonic Calendar:

1996 Literary and
Golden Laurel Awards

John L. Tone and
Paul Britten Austin

Twenty volumes on Napoleonic history were submitted to the 1996 Literary Committee of the International Napoleonic Society for its annual prize. The committee members included David Chandler, Philip Haythorn-thwaite, Robert Holtman, J. David Markham, Jeanne Ojala, John Severn, and Donald D. Horward.

The first prize of $2,500 went to John L. Tone for his book, The Fatal Knot: The Guerrilla War in Navarre and the Defeat of Napoleon, published by the University of North Carolina Press (1994).

Second prize of $1,500 went to Paul Britten Austin for the third volume in his 1812 Russian campaign series, 1812: The Great Retreat, published by Greenhill Books (1996).

The Golden Laurel Award, established to give special recognition to one book each year that has made a unique contribution to the field of Napoleonic studies, went to the reprint of One Leg: The Life and Letters of Henry William Paget, First Marquess of Anglesey, KG 1768-1854, published by Leo Cooper (1996). The certificate of recognition includes an award of $1,500. This book, first issued in 1961, was written by the seventh Marquess of Anglesey. It is important for its extensive use of letters and other unpublished primary material not generally available to scholars. Of particular interest is the first person account of the battle of Waterloo by Paget (Lord Uxbridge) who lost his leg.
