Medieval History Magazine

Review

by John Barnard

ISSN 1741-2285.

You'll find this on the shelves at W.H.Smith's. It's a venture by a French publisher and the Royal Armouries, and it's good; though at £3.60 ($8.95 in the USA) it's value is to the medieval wargamer, not perhaps to those who prefer the 'broad sweep' of conflict.

The medieval era is very wide indeed, from the fall of Rome virtually to 1600, and the magazine is producing a steady stream of 'battle and campaign' articles written by very well known names such as David Nicolle, Stephen Turnbull, Guy Wilson and Kelly De Vries.

Recent issues have included illustrated and well mapped articles on Nicopolis 1396, on Leignitz 1241, Manzikert 1071, and the Horns of Hattin 1187. All of these well worth taking a look at. I enjoyed a lengthy piece on the Border Rievers, and another on Viking combat techniques.

The magazine also crams a substantial number of reviews and coming events into its 80 pages; so information on all sorts of events is easily found here. Hopefully someone reading this review will be able to provide a little more information on the annual New South Wales Easter reenactment and games event, said to be the biggest in the southern hemisphere. I'd not heard of it.

Even if you're not a medievalist, there's still a mass of war games material to be found in this publication; though I should point out it's not purely military, and carries material on all sorts of associated themes.
