Hints on Playing Fire in the East

Introduction

by Roy Lane

This essay is a companion article to "Russian Tactical Doctrine," which was presented in TEN V. The time frame for the tactics outlined in each article is from the beginning of play in Fire in the East through Aug II 41. Over the next few issues I will present ideas for the tactical use of key Axis ground units and examine the operational objectives of the various army groups and the air force. Under the present rules, the methods of play recommended will be effective against either the "Runaway" or "Forward Defense" strategies.

My primary intent is to reach the intermediate-level player and stimulate general interest in FitE. The concepts presented will also be useful for the beginner to learn and understand. And even though some of the tactics will be standard fare for the experienced player and many master- level players will have variations of their own, it is my hope that all FitEISE fans will find something of value herein.

Using the Wehrmacht is easy if the Russian is fairly inexperienced. However, against a competent enemy the German must be devious and cunning to achieve predetermined Main Strategic Objectives (MSO's). To accomplish this the German must make use of every trick and tool available to him. Let's look at some of the more important of these.
