By Terry Hooker

The Raven; A Biography of Sam Houston, by Marquis James, pub. The American Past, New York 1990, pp.470, illus., 1st published 1929, this is a Book of the Month Club edition with slip cover, a classic work, includes some good contemporary quotes of the 1830's - 40's.

Use of the Baker Rifle in the Mexican Army during the Texas Revolution, by Ed Dubravsky, pub. Journal of the Alamo Battlefield Association, Vol. 3, No.1, pp.2-6, some good Mexican data used in the article.

Excavated Military Relics of the Texas Revolution and the Republic of Texas 1836-1846, by Bobby J. McKinney, pub. Military Collector & Historian, Journal of the Company of Military Historians, Washington D.C., Vol.51, No.3, pp.116-121, nice photos and text.

Un Curieux Personnage: Lopez de Santa Anna, by Daniel Peyrot, pub. C.F.F.H. (Club Français de la Figurine Historique), Paris No.2, 1999, pp.35-6, the article is accompanied by two coloured plates by Louis de Beaufort depicting 9 uniforms from 1814-1830, in the following issue of the Journal are another 3 coloured plates covering 1835-1853 with 10 figures.

Vieux Souvenirs 1818-1848, by de Mgr. Le Prince de Joinville, pub. L'Illustre Soleil du Dimanche, Paris 1870, in 22 parts, illus., the author was at the French attack on Vera Cruz in 1842, it has an illustration of that event showing French sailors and officers of the landing party.

The Mexican War, by David Nevin, pub. Time-Life Books, Alexandria, Virginia 1978, pp.233, illus., often been told about it but could never see it for sale and then I see two copies within a few months, good coloured photographs of original equipment, flags and medals, for me it is the illustrations that make this book a worthy reference work.

Tragedy At Taos; The Revolt of 1847, by James A. Crutchfield, pub. Republic of Texas Press, Texas 1995, pp.195, illus., 7 maps, I only have one other work that deals with this episode during the U.S. - Mexican war, so it comes in handy as a cross reference book.

The Rogue's March; John Riley and the St. Patrick's Battalion 1846-48, by Peter F. Stevens, pub. Brassey's, Washington 1999, pp. 333, 7 maps, this is a very readable account of the famous or infamous battalion, which should tie in with the other books on this unit by Robert Ryal Miller 1989 & Michael Hogan 1997 that stand out, I do find it hard to understand why people feel that these proven deserters were treated harshly, if you look at the punishments handed out in other countries in the 1840's during periods of peace and war, I'm surprised that they were not all hanged out of hand, or shot before they could surrender, worse things have happened in war and still are happening.

La Grande Aventure; L'Epopee de Comte de Raousset-Boulbon au Mexique 1850-1854, by Maurice Soulié, pub. Payot, Paris 1926, pp.253, illus., a French account of this filibuster in Sonora, Mexico.

Alienation of Church Wealth in Mexico; Social and Economic Aspects of the Liberal Revolution 1856-1875, by Jan Bazant, pub. Cambridge University Press, 1971, pp.326, this work helps to arrive at an understanding of just what was happening in Mexico to create a fertile arena for foreign intervention, and what happen afterwards.

L'Armée de Napoléon III (2); l'Expédition du Mexique, La Guerre Franco-Allemande 1870-1871, by Colonel Paul Willing, pub. Les Collections du Musée de l'Armée, Paris 1984, pp.128, pages 29 to 54 cover the Expedition to Mexico, reproducing 112 b/w photographs and illustrations from this period showing uniforms etc. with 7 coloured plates, the first 29 pages to the book covers troops from Africa 1852-1870 with 13 coloured plates and numerous b/w photographs and illustrations on the Foreign Legion, Light Infantry of Africa, Spahis, Chasseurs D'Afrique, and Algerian Tirailleurs, some of them relating to uniforms worn in Mexico too, a valuable source book, although, I think, only available at the museum in Paris.

Expédition du Mexique 1861 - 1867, by Capt. G. Noix, pub. Librairie Militaire de J. Dumaine, Paris 1874, pp.764,with atlas of 6 maps, this is the best book on the French Expeditionary Army in Mexico for organisational data, the author later became a General, it was while he was working at the Army Museum that he pulled together the details, from official reports etc. for this work, I am told that many of the files which were used now have data missing, so the book is also a unique record of the events, a rare source book, with a price to match.

La Cavalerie Française en campagne au Mexique 1862-1867, by C. H. Tavard, pub. Armes & Uniformes de l'Historie, No.18, April 1974, pp.16-20, illus., I had a photocopy of this article, but managed to obtain the whole magazine from France, a good article on the subject.

L'Expedition du Mexique par la Photo, pub. Tradition magazine, Paris November 1988, No.22, pp.39-41, 7 b/w photographs. L'Infanterie en 1870, by Louis Delpérier, pub. Tradition magazine, Paris, November 1989, No.34, pp.11-35, illus., although based on the 1870 uniform it also relates to the earlier 1860 shakos. Les Chasseurs a Pied sous le Second Empire, by Louis Delpérier, pub. Uniformes magazine, Paris, February 1985, pp.9-34, illus., pages 14-15 deal with Mexico.

L'Artillerie du Second Empire 1854-1854, by Louis Delpérier, pub. Tradition magazine, Paris, January 1991, No.48, pp.10-15, nice illustrations. Les Zouaves du Second Empire, by Louis Delpérier, pub.

Tradition magazine, Paris, November 1990, p.10-31, some really good coloured photographs of plates used. 1863 Les Tirailleurs Algériens, by Louis Delpérier, pub. Uniformes, No.94, April 1986, pp.7-13, illus., good colour plates, b/w photographs and text that are helpful for the Mexican Adventure.

Les Chassuers D'Afrique 1854-1870, by Louis Delpérier, pub. Uniformes magazine, Paris, January 1983, pp.30-36, nice illustrations.

Camerone; La campagne héroïque de la Légion Etrangére au Mexique, by Pierre Sergent, pub. Fayard, Paris 1980, pp.467, illus. 9 maps, a good account of the proceeding events and the siege with a good selection of photographs and maps.

Le Colonel Charles Louis Du Pin 1814-1868, by G. Mignard, pub. Képi Blanc, Special Camerone 2000 Issue, pp.10-15, a good article on the commander of the French Contra Guerrilla unit.

Charlotte de Belgique: Impératrice du Mexique, by Comtesse H. de Reinach Foussemagne, pub. Librairie Plon, Paris 1925, pp.391, 115 b/w photographs, 58 of these could be of help for the Mexico period, the majority of these have been used since, but there were a few that I had not seen before, the text includes many complete copies of letters which are often hard to find.

La Vie et les Souvenirs du Général Castelnau 1814-1890, by Georges Girard, pub. Nouvelle Collection Historique, Paris 1930, pp.286, pages 56-170 relate to when he was sent to Mexico, 1866-67, by Napoleon III to organise the withdrawal of the French Army, helpful text with complete letter included.

Mexico in Peace and War, by Thomas H. Russell, pub. Reilly & Britton Syndicate, Chicago 1914, pp. 320, 2 map, illus., covers the Occupation of Vera Cruz and the period of the Revolution 1910-14 in 96 pages, the b/w photographs are useful too. The Cristero Rebellion;

The Mexican People between Church and State 1926-1929, by Jean A. Meyer, pub. Cambridge Latin American Studies, Cambridge 1976, pp. 252, 2 maps, a little known rebellion at the moment that the government wanted to take over the power of the church, a good section on the formation of the rebel army and it's war, a handy piece in the jigsaw that is Mexican History.

The Annexation of Mexico; From the Aztecs to the I.M.F., by John Ross, pub. Common Courage Press, Maine U.S.A., 1998, pp.332, 3 maps, covers mainly the last 50 years of Mexican social and political history from page 110 onwards, written by a social activist, this work contains details and views that are usually swept under the carpet and ignored, so making it a valuable contemporary comment.
