By Terry Hooker
Pre-Columbian & Conquest Narrative of the Incas, by Juan de Betanzos, translated and edited by Roland Hamilton & Dana Buchanan, pub. University of Texas Press, 1996, pp.320, 4 maps, this manuscript was written in the 1550's, it was only in the 1980's that the majority of the work was found (an additional 64 chapters to add to the already known 18 chapters) in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, the author made these note from the personal experiences and oral traditions told to him by his Inca wife and members of her aristocratic family who had lived during the last days of the Inca rulers, a good contemporary reference work. Maya Conquistador, by Matthew Restall, pub. Beacon Press, Boston 1998, pp.250, 2 maps, an often forgotten area of the Conquest, the best thing in this work for me is the translation of original Maya text accounts of this period, many of these never before published in English and therefore a very useful addition to books on this period. Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America, by Cabeza de Vaca, translated and edited by Cyclone Covey, pub. Collier Books, New York 1972, pp. 143, the classic account of his journey during the years 1527-37 through Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Northern Mexico, an outstanding feat of survival for the remaining 4 men from a total of 300 who had started the expedition. Colonial Period Native Resistance and the Pax Colonial in New Spain, edited by Susan Schroeder, pub. University of Nebraska Press,1998, 190 pp. 6 maps, covers the last 200 years of Spanish rule in New Spain detailing various regional native uprisings against them and how they were dealt with, useful for understanding the internal problems in New Spain during this period.
