Pre-Columbian & Conquest:

The Development of the Inca State, by Brian S. Bauer, pub. University of Texas Press 1992, the author is a Professor of Anthropology so it relates mainly to the social and expansion of the Inca Empire, some good maps of the regions, a good new rethink on the origins of the Inca State.

Colonial Period:

Las Milicias: Instituciones Militares Hispanoamericanas, by Santiago-Gerardo Suarez, pub. Biblioteca de la Academia Nacional de la Historia, Caracas 1984, No.171, a good reference when coupled with Spanish works on this subject.

The Narrative of General Venables; with an appendix of papers relating to the Expedition to the West Indies and the Conquest of Jamaica, 1654-1655, edited by C. H. Firth, pub. The Royal Historical Society, Camden Series No.61, London 1900, this is one of the books to have on this expedition, a very interesting read with good military detail.

The Anglo-Spanish Struggle for Mosquitia, by Troy S. Floyd, pub. University of New Mexico Press, 1967, covers the period from 1633-1790, a detailed study and a good source book.

A series of article have appeared in the Journal of the Company of Military Historians by John T. Powell that relate the various Spanish Colonial artifacts hat have been found in the U.S. they are; Spanish Naval Insignia from "El Cazador", Vol.49, No.3, pp.126, Spanish Royal Artillery Collar Insignia, Vol.49, No.4, pp.155, Spanish Buttons of British Manufacture, circa 1808-1814, Vol.50, No.1, pp.38-40, A Spanish Colonial Star Shot, Vol.50, No.3, pp.131-132, Two Spanish Provincial military buttons from Florida, Vol.50, No.4. pp.73-74, another item of interest in this Journal is; Spanish Units in Florida, 1793-1815, by René Chartrand, Vol.50, No.3, pp.108-114, good research, as always.
