by Tom Barnes

TIME: 10 p.m., Saturday, July 22, 1990
Place: Plugville, Indiana

BACKGROUND: You are a citizen of Plugville, a very isolated Southern Indiana farm town of about 1000 people. The main businesses in town are farming, which doesn't bring in much, even in good times, and toxic waste dumping, which brought lots of money, if you could stand the smell, which most people could. You always figured that the dump was good for Plugville folks, even some of the the kids was born funny-lookin' an' some of the pigs was born with extra parts. Then just around dusk there was a big explosion out by the dump, which is just by the First Independant Charismatic Pentacostal Church of God.

You and everyone else ran to see what had happened, 'cause you thought the Big Foot had gone up, which would've been better than the Fourth of July fireworks at the Goatfarm VFW. Instead you saw black ooze flowing over the Pentacostal's graveyard. As you watched, you saw scrabbling from the ground. And you done near crapped yer pants when you saw old Ida Mae Whittacker, who died 3 months ago, rear up outa the ground like she were gettin' outta bed. And right beside her was her husband Earl and everyone else who ever got buried in that cemetary, which was just about all of the town for five generations. An' all the dead folks had this mean blue glow in their eyes, them as had eyes...

You knew there was trouble when you saw them tear into Brother Fiscus, the Pentacostal Preacher. Held waded into them with his white leatherette covered Bible and was trying to cast the Devil outta them. They just tored him apart and started EATIN' him, just like in a movie, if a movie were more like real life. Only it weren't in a movie, so you ran like hell, along with all the other smart people in Plugville.

You ran to your car, but you couldn't get it to start. You ran to your telephone, but the line was dead. And the radio was dead, and TV was dead, and the power was dead. So you ran outside, and you heard everybody else saying that their cars and telephones and power didn't work neither. And, other folks were going crazy and was shutting themselves up in their homes, but you knew that wouldn't protect them, 'cause you seen every monster movie in the video store. You knew that folks had to stick together and fight back, 'less they wanted to get turned into zombies themselves.

So you yelled out to whoever was still listening, to go home and get their guns, and come back in 15 minutes. To your suprise, lots of people showed up with guns and knives and lots of other stuff. From there, it was democracy in action. Folks took a vote, elected-leaders and decided to divide themselves up into groups and set out to defend themselves until sun-up (at about 5:30 a.m.) when they figured they could send a rescue party to Goatfarm, 25 miles away.

WEATHER: Weather is clear, warm and muggy. There is a quarter moon in the sky, and visibility is 100 yards in the open.
