Battle Account: Westphalian Wargame

by Mike Gilbert

It was a direct attack. All units had fallen back. The fusilier garde of Westphalia advanced against the hill held by the Prussian garde and the Russian line, plus 4 batteries. The garde led the attack. Cavalry galloped behind them. The Hesse-Darmstadt column and Westphalian line followed.

A sheet of flame erupted. To the left, the cavalry fell under cannister fire and the support Hesse units routed. To the right, Westphalian hussars and line units joined the rout. The fusilier garde was left alone in its charge. Passing the silent batteries, the fusiliers struck the center of the Russo-Prussian line and threw them back. Jerome neared, followed by his carriage and guard, and tossed a handful of chevalier of the garde medals to the troops. Then they withdrew--a retreat with honor.

The temptation is too great. I can not resist! Indeed it was a great achievement. The fusilier gardes of Westphalia did a fantastic job. Their honor is absolutely, without the shadow of a doubt, behind any criticism. They were magnificant.... It takes all the verve of a professional writer such as Mike to give us the full appreciation of the performances of the fusuiler gardes of Weatphalia.

But what would have happened if such assault had taken place a little earlier in the game with the support of the battalion of Grenadiers of the same Westphalian Guard with the support of infantry units that would not have had to form squares because the Westphalian cavalry had been previously wasted in the game. Perhaps that would have been a greater day for Westphalia.
