Campaigns Wargame Set Up

by Mike Gilbert

For the longest time, there has been talk of staging a campaign. It's about time something was done about this. So, if everyone is agreeable, I will do it.

While visiting Jean, I read a British fanzine dealing with wargaming on both one to one scale and with 25s. They were using a campaign system similar to that which I myself have used in the past. I'm perfectly willing to take on all the paperwork involved; and the use of a campaign will at last allow everyone the chance to be a commander, while staying within a game system that allows the flexibility to structure situations to test out any new rules suggested.

THE PRINCIPLES:

A) We will list all troops available and put them into armies and/or divisions, with at least 20% of the commanders being actual historical characters (naturally special morale considerations will be applied to such commanders). The armies will consist of: 1) Austrians, 2) British, 3) French, 4) Germans (etc.), 5) Westphalians, 6) Russians, 7) Others.

B) Selection of a circa 1812-13 area--German, Italian-Austrian border, etc. for scene of conflict.

C) Each army shall be placed not less than 50 miles from any other army on the map at the beginning of the game. The game will have a duration of 8 game months during which the objectives (stated by me and subject to agreement by the players) must be met.

D) Movement will be at the rate of 50 miles per week for all armies except the French and their allies and the British, all of whom march at the rate of 75 miles per week. Movement will be on the map until armies are in contact. Then the game will be designed using troops in the available armies.

E) An army's total strength will be 50% above what is available as castings. (That will account for multiple battalions, stragglers, and extra reinforcements.) Extra movement may be done at the rate of 20 miles per week as forced march, but a loss of 20% of total strength must be sustained. Also, any army may regenerate to its original strength if it remains stationary and engages in no action for one game month.

The above is an outline of a campaign system. The movement, etc. would take about ten minutes at the end of each game to set up for the next one. Seconds and thirds in command will be designated so someone will always be available to fill in if the commander can't be there. I could go on for pages, but bow about it?

Response

Very good Mike. You have the ball. I am sure that you won't drop it. Perhaps we should consider to include some provisions and rules on units that have sustained severe casualties during a battle. We are always so eager to use our units to the last man! That is not very realistic in my opinion. Of course on can find examples of units fighting to the last man, but that was the exception rather than the common rule. Units that have more than 80% losses in a given battle should be sent back to the depot .... Units that have more than 50% losses should also be penalized ... So should be Guard units with a certain percentage of losses. Then perhaps with that in mind we should have more realistic battles. At least one should hope so.
