Part IV: Update

As promised, this is the first in a periodic series of updates regarding Turkish figures that are available for the Napoleonic period.

25mm:

Redoubt Figures (available from Redoubt Enterprises, 49 Channel View Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN22 7LN, United Kingdom, and Miniature Service Center, 1525 Bridge 163, Yuba City, CA 95993; 916/673-5169).

Redoubt has expanded its extensive range of 25mm Ottomans. While a part of their Renaissance range, many of these figures will be of interest to those wargaming in later periods. The detail and historical accuracy of these figures are probably the best on the market. However, they are large '25mm' and will need to be used in separate units from other manufacturers.

Infantry additions include further Azabs, Arnauts and early Janissary figures. Pride of place goes to the 10-figure packs of Peyks and Solaks. These are two piece castings (legs and torso) which make it possible for you to have a variety of poses. Unfortunately, Redoubt wrongly describe these guard troops as "making up the main part of the Ottoman armies."

New cavalry figures include four late feudal Spahis, a Qapakulu and several Dellis, including a wonderful vignette of a plunder laden Delli leading three slaves with a severed human head on the point of his shield! The new Turkish Commander is also a beautifully detailed figure.

A heavy gun on a four-wheeled carriage fills the artillery gap in the range along with a huge war wagon complete with light gun and crew.

All the figures came well packaged with no damage and minimal flash -- Highly recommended.

Cost (if ordering from the UK) is 60p for foot and either £.90 or £1.10 for horse. Postage is 50 percent for airmail. Interested persons in the United States should contact the Miniature Service Center in Yuba City directly for their prices.

Minifigs: Besides the 15mm Otttomans/Mamluks and the 15mm/25mm Renaissance lines, Minifigs also produces a small selection for their Tricorne Range (1700-1760) in 25mm. This includes artillery crew, Janissaries and command, "infantry" and command, and Sipahis and command. The nice thing about these figures over the Renaissance lines is that they carry more contemporary muskets and the cavalry has carbines rather than bows.

Guernsey Foundry: From the grapevine comes word that Guernsey Foundry is working on a line of Seven Years War Ottomans in 25mm. That would be a nice change from adapting the Renaissance figures that do not always have the correct equipment. We don't know when the line will come out, but believe it will be awhile as current plans call for it to be the last of their five planned Seven Years War lines.

15mm:

Battle Honours, USA (available from 19th Century Miniatures, 13595 Green St., Grand Haven, MI, 49417; 616/846-4764). Battle Honours, UK, and Battle Honours, USA, are now reaffiliated, with the result that the Battle Honours line of 15mm Turkish Napoleonic figures are now available in the US. There are 16 different infantry, cavalry and artillery figures available, including Guard Janissaries, an Ottoman Pasha Command pack and some Command figures.

Cost: Figures are available in bags of 100 infantry (with command figures) for $20 or 24 infantry for $6. Cavalry comes in bags of 24 figures (with horses) for $14 or 12 figures for $8. Artillery comes in bags of 12 guns and 48 figures for $20. Separate command bags are $3 for 12 infantry figures. The Ottoman Pasha Command pack costs $8. A new catalog and sample figures can be ordered for $2.00.

Minifigs, UK (1-5 Graham Road, Southampton, SO14 OAX, United Kingdom). Minifigs has just released a new and very complete line of Ottoman Turks for the Napoleonic period. There are 29 packs of infantry (including Guard Janissaries in three different poses) with three different Infantry Command packs, seven different types of cavalry, and two types of guns (light and heavy). These figures are not currently being produced in the US by Ral Partha (although that may change in the future) and are only available from Minifigs in the UK at this time.

Cost: Infantry, cavalry and artillery are £1.10 per pack. Artillerymen and Command packs are £1.25. There are eight infantry or four cavalry per pack.
