Khalkin Gol 1939

Soviets vs. Japanese

Introduction

by Tom Harris

For various reasons, it is often forgotten that in the late 1930s Japan and the Soviet Union fought a series of "border incidents" along their common Siberian-Chinese boundaries. Though not well reported in the West, they provide an interesting look at two very different armies of World War II, and how each applied the lessons that they learned in the summer of 1939.

For the referee, this is a very easy battlefield to make. There is the dry streambed and a series of rolling ground. One need not provide trees, buildings, or other similar cover-there isn't any. The following order of battle is not historically accurate, but is selected to show players the resources that the two sides had present on the battlefield.
