Hill 260.8
Grossdeutschland at Nowosselowska:
July 8th, 1943

Referee's Notes and Historical Commentary

by Frank Chadwick/Greg Novak

Referee's Notes on Playing the Game

1. The game starts at 10 AM on the 8th, and continues until the end of the 0415 PM turn. The map shows the major points and their relationship to one another. The table size shown is 10' by 5'. but this can be adjusted by the referee. The referee may add additional terrain in terms of fields. Fields provide cover only to stands facing out at the edges, and do not black line of sight.

2. Victory is determined by the following conditions:

Decisive German Victory: The Germans capture and hold both Hill 260.8 and Nowesselowka.
Tactical German Victory: The Germans capture and hold Hill 260.8.
Draw: The Germans and Soviets are still fighting for control of Hill 260.8 at the end of the 0415 turn. Each side must control at least one third of the hill.
Tactical Soviet Victory: The Soviets prevent the Germans from occupying any major part of Hill 260.8 at the end of the game.
Decisive Soviet Victory: The Germans have been forced to withdraw back to their start line.

3. If the referee wishes to make the game a bit easier to run, consider deleting the sections dealing with the arrival of aircraft, and remove all AA units and stands from the game.

Historical Notes

The German Battle Group drove the Soviets off Hill 260.8, but was unable to take Nowesselowka on the 8th. Gross Deutchland was never able to continue its push north, as it was diverted west to assist 3rd Panzer Division against repeated Soviet counterattacks on the German left flank. At one point, after stopping a Soviet counterattack to the west, Gross Deutchland assembled just to the south of Hill 260.8 in an attempt to continue the attack on Nowesselowka, only to have to change direction and move back to the west to re-establish the lines there after yet another Soviet counterattack.
