Frontier Miniatures

15mm Napoleonic French

By Jim Birdseye

New issue from Frontier Miniatures available from Modeler's Mart, Inc., 1183 Cedar Creek St., Safety Harbor, FL - 15mm Revolution French. To some extent these figures add a new area, what I would call pre-Napoleonics. These are white metal figures representing the French and Austrian armies during the period 1789-1800, and because they include figures from the Ancien Regime, you could say they extend the period into the 1770's. The figures included in the sample were a Sans Culotte (bicom), a Fusilieror Legere in Mirleton and a 1798 Legere in bicom. Each pack comes with multiple poses and prices range from $3.50 for twelve figures to $6.50 for 24 figures.

The figures themselves are well cast, free of flash, and generally well sculpted. They are a little squat as has been the case with Frontier's 15mm line, but they are well within acceptable size for 15mm. After all only toy soldiers are all the same size. The Sans Culotte is barefoot with a ragged uniform. These should make interesting units. The detailing on the figures is exaggerated to allow easy identification and painting. The figures are well animated and the facial features are nice. The uniforms and gear appear to be correct. The variations in poses make for lifelike formations. Since some of these uniforms continued in use long after "new regulations" changed the look of the French Army, a few of these figures thrown into your post 1800 battalions may be an interesting variation. These figures can be modified to make Spanish regulars or French colonial troops.
