Woodlands Warfare
America East of the Mississippi

Conclusion, Conflicts, and Bibliography

by Capt. Frederick Ellsesser

The purpose of this article has been to give a brief background for the century of conflict that saw the birth of America on this continent. The participants in this great struggle were varied and colorful, and I have hit upon only a few of the tribes and ignored several of the European countries involved. Though the conflicts were small by the European standards of the day, they were undoubtedly more decisive in terms of subsequent history.

Fifteen years after the Battle of Blenheim, Europe was pretty much the same as before; fifteen years after the Battle of Rossbach, the same could be said. Fifteen years after the Battle of Quebec, the American colonies were on the verge of the greatest revolution the world has ever seen and the world has not been the same since. Recreating some of the events of this century can only hold a lasting appeal for the wargamer who wants to explore.

The Dictionary of Wars by George C. Kohn was also of some help in the preparation of this article, as wereseveral standard works on the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution. I can also highly recommend President Washington's Indian War, and any of the books by Francis Parkman, as well as the series The Winning of the West by Theodore Roosevelt.
