Connoisseur

28mm Pony Wars

By Ken Bunger

The master, Peter Gilder, has recaptured his old form. His new company, The Connoisseur Range, has released a superb range of Pony Wars figures in a large 25mm scale. These figures are 28mm from foot to eye, but are totally compatable in size with the figures Peter designed for Hincliffe, and their extensive ACW and Gunfighter ranges. Even the cavalry is perfectly interchangeable, although the heavy horses (old style) work better. These new horses are superbly animated and proportioned. He provides a variety of positions, so there are four variations of walking and trotting types.

The details of the figures seems to be Peter's best work to date (I haven't seen his new Rennaissance figures yet). The foot and mounted figures are in very animated poses, with the fortunate exceptions, as follows: PW2 a determined trooper kneeling with his carbine, PW12C a mounted rancher in coat, PW10C a mounted cowboy, PW1 C a mounted trooper, and PW3C a mounted officer. These mounted figures are all riding in an at ease position. The campaign hats can have their brims bent up or down to give a realistic looking varied appearance. The troopers wear the shirt with rolled sleeves and suspenders, appearing to have just ridden off the movie set in Monument Valley! The suspenders in fact were historically rare, but I'm glad the figures have them. I highly recommend this range.

The Connoisseur Range is available from Connoisseur Figures, Enchanted Cottage, Folkton, Scarborough, N. Yorks. YO11 3UH, England. Foot and mounted figures cost 30p and horses are 40p each. Add 30% Surface and 60% Airmail postage. The easiest way to pay, as with most British firms is by Visa or Mastercard. Just send number and expiration date. I've found service excellent with an airmail turn around time of under three weeks. The cost per figure, including airmail post, is about 57 cents!
